Since its founding in 1998, it has developed innovative programs that address interpersonal, community and societal violence, and the impact of disasters and terrorism. The Center promotes the development of new trauma services for children and their families, both on the local and national level. In the last 3 years it provided more than 640 hours of trauma training to over 5,000 professionals from both JBFCS and community agencies and schools.

Combating Compassion Fatigue and Sustaining Passion For Your Work

Working in a helping profession often means exposure to traumatized clients, clients in crisis, and stressful events. Over time the impact of this work can accumulate and lead to compassion fatigue or vicarious traumatization. This training will examine the physical, psychological and social effects of trauma work on the clinician. Participants will build awareness of the vulnerabilities for developing compassion fatigue and learn strategies for its prevention, including stress reduction and self-care techniques.

Time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location: JBFCS, 135 West 50th Street, NYC

Psychological First Aid

Psychological First Aid is an evidence-informed approach to helping adults, adolescents and children in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. It provides guiding principles and specific techniques which prepare clinicians, advocates and community service providers to mobilize after a disaster. The modular approach is based upon evidence of risk and resilience following critical events. The culturally informed techniques can be used in the field and designed to be delivered in a flexible, developmentally consistent manner. Attendees will learn and rehearse this modular approach. PFA versions are available for Community Religious Professionals, Spanish-speaking communities, and (in the near future) schools.skills are a must for all community practitioners who want to respond quickly when a disaster occurs.

PTSD and the Older Adult

What's known about PTSD for seniors and what are the assessment, diagnostic and treatment challenges when working with older adults? We will consider the effect of developmental and biopsychosocial factors which contribute, as well as tailoring treatment to the needs of this population. Clinicians are encouraged to come prepared with case examples.

This training will help participants: Learn about the impact of trauma and PTSD for older adults, appreciate the complexity of diagnosis, co-morbidity and the need for accurate assessment when working with older adults with PTSD, consider effective treatment options and management and recognize the effects of secondary trauma and identify effective coping strategies.
