People Living with Developmental Disabilities

Everyday people living with developmental disabilities live lives of courage, hope and dignity. Along the way, they teach the rest of us the true meaning of grace. It is for them that our services are designed—so that they may live full lives, replete with purpose, joy and as much independence as possible. Our Developmental Disability programs in Brooklyn and in Westchester offer community home-based services for families caring for their loved ones at home.

Mishkon, a Hebrew word meaning "dwelling place," is the name of our residential program where people of all ages with profound developmental disabilities are cared for. The program has grown to provide care to 127 adults and children in ten different residences throughout Brooklyn. Mishkon is able to accommodate the developmentally disabled in the Orthodox, Chassidic, and Russian communities. It is also home to a Medicaid waiver program that provides Medicaid Service Coordination and/or in-home residential habitation to 250 families living at home in the community. Each residence is unique in its own way, and each places a great emphasis on giving our residents as much independence and community integration as possible.

For more information on Mishkon, download our Mishkon One-Pager (in PDF format).

We also have three homes in Westchester; our Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, and Vernondale residences. These homes serve individuals with varied challenges and levels of functioning, including non-ambulatory and dually diagnosed individuals.
