The Doug Kroll Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2002 for clients of the Youth Counseling League, the Doug Kroll Memorial Scholarship is intended to help young people realize their full potential by providing financial assistance to highly motivated, ambitious clients of YCL. Doug Kroll was a senior social worker at YCL from 1995 to 2001. A graduate of both University of Michigan (BA) and Fordham University (MSW), Doug worked closely with adolescents and believed that through education, a person could transform their life. Q: How much is the scholarship award and is it only for one year?

A: The scholarship is from $1,500 - $4,000 and you can re-apply. Past clients who have completed treatment can also apply with approval of their previous therapist. Funds are awarded upon proof of enrollment.

Q: Who is the scholarship for?

A: Clients of YCL (between the ages of 17 and 22) who are about to graduate from high school or currently in college and plan to go on to either a two-year college, four-year college or vocational school.

Q: What if my grades are not that great? Should I still apply?

A: While grades are important, we will consider many factors including helping others, family responsibilities, employment history, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

Q: What is involved in the application process?

A. After speaking with your YCL therapist, you will need to submit:
Completed application form (click here for PDF) is due to your YCL therapist by March 30th and must be accompanied by the following items:

  • Personal essay about yourself and how this scholarship will help you achieve your goals (500 words or more).
  • A copy of your high school transcript.
  • One letter of reference from a teacher.

Q: Is there anything else required of me if the scholarship is awarded to me?

A: A personal letter to Doug’s family is required. The letter is critical and without it, future financial support would not be possible. The deadline for this letter is February 1st, after your first semester, and should include your first semester grade results and how you have benefited from the scholarship.
